Faiz Ahmed Faiz (1911 to 1984) was born in a village near Sialkot and spent his life between poetry, journalism and politics, including four years in prison from 1951 to 1955. He kept the classical ghazal's vocabulary of love and separation and gave it a second meaning, the struggle of ordinary people. Naqsh-e-Faryadi and Dast-e-Saba are the early collections; many of his poems are known through the singers who performed them.

Speak, for your lips are free; speak, your tongue is still your own.

Do not ask of me, my love, the love I once had; I thought if you existed, life would be radiant.

The world has estranged me from your memory; the sorrows of daily life are even more captivating than you.

When from the Kaaba of God's earth, all the idols shall be carried away.

Let the breeze of new spring blow and fill the flowers with colour; come, so that the garden's business may go on.

I sacrifice myself for your streets, O homeland, where the custom has become that no one walks with head held high.

There are other sorrows in the world besides love; there are other comforts besides the comfort of union.

Come, let us too raise our hands in prayer — we who do not even remember the custom of prayer.

This stained light, this night-bitten dawn — this is not the dawn we were waiting for.

I was accounting for the sorrows of the world; today you came to mind beyond all reckoning.

Now your forgotten sorrows come into my heart the way idols return to the Kaaba they were parted from.

At night your lost memory came to my heart like spring quietly arriving in a wasteland.

No place on the road appealed to Faiz at all; upon leaving the beloved's lane, he headed toward the gallows.

If the tools of pen and tablet were seized, what does it matter? I have dipped my fingers in the blood of my heart.

Courage

It is certain that we too shall witness that day which has been promised.

Longing for the flowers of your lips, we were offered up on the dry branch of the gallows; yearning for the candles of your hands, we were slain on half-dark roads.

We shall see; it is certain that we too shall see the day that has been promised.

Having lost both worlds to your love, someone departs after spending a night of sorrow.

Do not ask of me, my love, that love which was before; I had thought that if you were, life would be radiant.

Let some clouds come, let some wine come; after that, let whatever torment may, come.

Let the breeze of early spring blow and fill the flowers with colour; come now, so that the business of the garden may go on.

We who have ended up strangers after so much hospitality — after how many meetings will we become friends again?

I sacrifice myself to your streets, O homeland, where a custom prevails that none may walk with head held high.

We shall see; it is certain that we too shall see that day which has been promised, which is written on the tablet of eternity.

No stop along the way appealed to Faiz; leaving the beloved's lane, he walked straight to the gallows.
