Who is going to look after this house? Every day something in it breaks.

Jaun Elia (1931 to 2002) was born in Amroha and lived in Karachi, where he was known as much for his readings as for his books. His poetry is restless and self-mocking, and it found a large young audience after his death. Much of what circulates online under his name is not his; this page keeps only verified couplets.
Who is going to look after this house? Every day something in it breaks.
I am strange too, so strange that I have ruined myself and do not even regret it.
Why can I find no peace? Was there only one person in the whole world?
Why be polite about saying it: whoever is happy, I envy them.
There is nothing to be afraid of any more; now everyone is afraid of everyone.
I have lived the very life that could not be lived.
Perhaps I never really loved anyone, but I kept convincing everyone that I did.
How can I leave you, my love? You have become a habit of my life.
How charming you are, and how tender I am towards you. What a cruelty that people like us will die.
People take me for a busy man, but here my grief is my only free time.
When the world does not care about us, why should we care about the world?
The man must have gone on time; it was time that had already passed.
