Call it resentment if you like, but come, even if only to hurt my heart; come, even if only to leave me once again.

Ahmad Faraz (1931 to 2008) was born in Kohat and became perhaps the most popular Urdu poet of his generation, for love poetry that sounds spoken rather than written and for poems against military rule that led to his detention and years abroad. A great many verses circulate under his name that he never wrote; only couplets that are genuinely his are kept here.

Call it resentment if you like, but come, even if only to hurt my heart; come, even if only to leave me once again.
