Sahir Ludhianvi (1921 to 1980) wrote poems of protest and love, and then became one of the most admired lyricists in Hindi and Urdu cinema. Talkhiyan is his main collection. Many of the lines here are known to people who have never opened a book of poetry, because they heard them as songs.
تم مجھے بھول بھی جاؤ تو یہ حق ہے تم کو
میری بات اور ہے میں نے تو محبت کی ہے

ظلم پھر ظلم ہے بڑھتا ہے تو مٹ جاتا ہے
خون پھر خون ہے ٹپکے گا تو جم جائے گا
Tyranny is tyranny — when it grows, it is wiped out; blood is blood — when it drips, it will clot.
چلو اک بار پھر سے اجنبی بن جائیں ہم دونوں
نہ میں تم سے کوئی امید رکھوں دل نوازی کی
نہ تم میری طرف دیکھو غلط انداز نظروں سے

If an acquaintance turns into an affliction, it is better to forget it; if a bond becomes a burden, it is better to break it.

This world of customs hungry for wealth — even if one were to win such a world, what would it be worth?
سنسار سے بھاگے پھرتے ہو بھگوان کو تم کیا پاؤ گے
اس لوک کو بھی اپنا نہ سکے اس لوک میں بھی پچھتاؤ گے
You run from the world — how will you find God? You could not make this world your own; in the next you will only have regrets.
جنگ تو خود ہی ایک مسئلہ ہے

War is itself a problem; what solution to problems can war offer?
اک شہنشاہ نے دولت کا سہارا لے کر

An emperor, leaning on his wealth, has made a mockery of the love of us poor.
