Muhammad Iqbal (1877 to 1938) was born in Sialkot, studied in Lahore, Cambridge and Munich, and wrote in both Urdu and Persian. His poetry turns on khudi, the self that a person builds through effort and faith, and on the condition of Muslims in his time. Pakistan remembers him as its national poet; Bang-e-Dara and Bal-e-Jibril are the collections most readers start with.
