Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib (1797 to 1869) lived in Delhi through the last years of the Mughal court and the upheaval of 1857. His Urdu divan is small, but no Urdu poet is quoted more often: the couplets are compact, often witty, and turn ordinary grief and desire into something that still sounds modern. His letters, written in plain conversational Urdu, are read as literature in their own right.

Thousands of desires, each worth dying for; many of my wishes came true, yet they were still too few.

It is a heart, not stone or brick — why should it not fill with pain? I shall weep a thousand times; why should someone torment me?

The world is a children's playground before me; day and night, a spectacle unfolds before me.

When nothing was, God was; had nothing been, God would have been. My existence drowned me — had I not been, what would it matter?

I know the reality of paradise, but to keep the heart happy, Ghalib, this thought is pleasant.

When a person gets used to sorrow, the sorrow vanishes; so many hardships fell upon me that they became easy.

At everything I say, you ask, 'What are you?' Let me ask you — what manner of conversation is this?

The prison of life and the chains of sorrow are essentially the same; why should a man find freedom from grief before death?

It was not my fate to meet the beloved; had I lived longer, the same waiting would have continued.

A sigh needs a lifetime to take effect; who lives long enough to win your tresses?

I agree that you won't be neglectful, but I will have turned to dust by the time you notice.

No hope bears fruit; no solution comes into sight.

Death has an appointed day; why then does sleep not come all night?

What varied joys desire takes in its labor; if there were no death, what would be the pleasure of living?

Through love, my nature found the taste of life; I found the cure for pain, and found an incurable pain.

With what face will you go to the Kaaba, Ghalib? Have you no shame?

If without You nothing exists, then what is all this commotion, O God?

The glow that comes on my face upon seeing her — she thinks the patient is getting better.

What cure is there for the sorrow of existence but death, Asad? The candle burns in every hue until dawn.

O naive heart, what has happened to you? What is the cure for this pain after all?

However much one speaks of witnessing the Divine, it cannot be expressed without mentioning wine and cup.

O Lord, they neither understood nor will understand my words; give them another heart, or give me another tongue.

May you live a thousand years, and may every year have fifty thousand days.

It was not my fate to meet the beloved; had I lived longer, it would have been the same waiting.

I grant that Ghalib is nothing; but if he comes free, what is the harm?

If the Tigris cannot be seen in a drop, nor the whole in a part, then it was a boys' game, not a seeing eye.

The engraving complains of whose bold penmanship? Every figure in the painting wears a garment of paper.

The joy of a drop is to dissolve in the river; when pain crosses its limit, it becomes the cure.

How far apart are the tavern door and the preacher, Ghalib; but I know this much — he was entering as I was leaving.

Until one opens a wound's mouth, it is hard for anyone to open a path of speech to you.

However deft our hands have grown at idol-breaking, while we live there is yet another heavy stone on the path.

Again the weeping eye came to my memory; the heart and soul thirsted for a cry of lament.

The day of death is fixed; then why does sleep not come the whole night through?

I am eager and they are indifferent; O God, what is this affair?

Having given one's heart away, why should one go on singing laments? When the heart is no longer in the breast, why should there be a tongue in the mouth?

Love has made Ghalib useless; otherwise, I too was a man of capability.

Where now is that parting and that union? Where are those nights and days, those months and years?

There is no force over love — it is such a fire, Ghalib, that cannot be lit at will and cannot be extinguished.

Dying brought me disgrace — why did I not drown in the river? Then no funeral would rise, nor any grave would exist.

I die wishing for death; death comes, but it does not come.

Let me go now and live in a place where there is no one; no one to converse with, no one who speaks my tongue.

Man was created for the ache of the heart; otherwise, for obedience, there was no shortage of angels.

Do not fall for the deception of existence, Asad; the entire universe is a circle in the net of imagination.

Although grief is soul-killing, how can we escape when we have a heart? If there were no grief of love, there would be the grief of livelihood.

The heart longs once more for that leisure, when night and day we might sit lost in thoughts of the beloved.

When a person grows accustomed to grief, grief itself fades away; so many hardships befell me that they became easy.

Courage

There is a desolation like no other desolation — seeing the desert reminded me of home.

You should have watched my path a few more days; you left alone, now stay alone a few more days.

In love there is no difference between living and dying; we live only to behold that heartless one for whom we would die.
