Beyond the stars there are worlds yet more; there are still more tests of love to endure.
Verses on love and longing, with English translations. The ghazal rarely describes love head on; the beloved, the rival and the night carry the meaning.
Beyond the stars there are worlds yet more; there are still more tests of love to endure.
Reason is your shield, love is your sword; O my dervish, your caliphate conquers the world.
Love leapt fearlessly into the fire of Nimrod; reason is still busy watching from the rooftop.
Thousands of desires, each worth dying for; many of my wishes came true, yet they were still too few.
It is a heart, not stone or brick — why should it not fill with pain? I shall weep a thousand times; why should someone torment me?
At everything I say, you ask, 'What are you?' Let me ask you — what manner of conversation is this?
It was not my fate to meet the beloved; had I lived longer, the same waiting would have continued.
I agree that you won't be neglectful, but I will have turned to dust by the time you notice.
Through love, my nature found the taste of life; I found the cure for pain, and found an incurable pain.
The glow that comes on my face upon seeing her — she thinks the patient is getting better.
O naive heart, what has happened to you? What is the cure for this pain after all?
O Lord, they neither understood nor will understand my words; give them another heart, or give me another tongue.
Do not ask of me, my love, the love I once had; I thought if you existed, life would be radiant.
Let the breeze of new spring blow and fill the flowers with colour; come, so that the garden's business may go on.
There are other sorrows in the world besides love; there are other comforts besides the comfort of union.
Now your forgotten sorrows come into my heart the way idols return to the Kaaba they were parted from.
At night your lost memory came to my heart like spring quietly arriving in a wasteland.
No place on the road appealed to Faiz at all; upon leaving the beloved's lane, he headed toward the gallows.
I have heard that people gaze at her with full eyes; so let me stay in her city a few days and see.
Those who love you will not be few; but in your gathering, I will not be there.
Love is not blind; love is the eye that does not see faults.
Do not break anyone's heart; perhaps that is the very heart that prays for you.
Even if you forget me, it is your right; my case is different — I loved you.
Every leaf, every plant knows my condition; the flower may or may not know, but the whole garden knows.
Why do you ask about Mir's faith and religion? He drew a tilak on his forehead, sat in the temple — he abandoned Islam long ago.
See whether it rises from the heart or from the soul; this faint smoke, where does it come from?
All my schemes went awry and no medicine did any good; see how this sickness of the heart finished me off in the end.
Even when I sigh, I become notorious; even when she kills, there is no talk of it.
May you live a thousand years, and may every year have fifty thousand days.
Come, let us become strangers once again, the two of us: I shall not look to you for any tenderness, nor shall you look at me with glances that say too much.
When love teaches the manners of self-awareness, the secrets of sovereignty are revealed to slaves.
I admit I am not worthy of your sight, but look at my longing, look at my waiting.
My song of longing has raised a tumult in the sanctuary of the Essence; cries of 'mercy!' ring through the idol-house of the Attributes.
Love is the breath of Gabriel, love is the heart of the Prophet; love is God's messenger, love is God's word.
It was not my fate to meet the beloved; had I lived longer, it would have been the same waiting.
Until one opens a wound's mouth, it is hard for anyone to open a path of speech to you.
Again the weeping eye came to my memory; the heart and soul thirsted for a cry of lament.
Having lost both worlds to your love, someone departs after spending a night of sorrow.
Do not ask of me, my love, that love which was before; I had thought that if you were, life would be radiant.
A wave has just risen in my heart; a fresh breeze has just begun to blow.
I hear people gaze at her to their heart's content; so let me stay a few days in her city and see for myself.
Love is that fire which burns and also keeps alive.
I am the reflection of a fragrance; let no one stop me from scattering, and if I scatter, let no one gather me up.
What can I say of the delicacy of those lips? They are like the petal of a rose.
Mir, in those half-open eyes lies all the intoxication of wine.
I am eager and they are indifferent; O God, what is this affair?
All my schemes went awry and no medicine did any good; see how this sickness of the heart finished me off in the end.
I abandoned love, I mended my collar; O world, be happy now — I have drunk this poison too.
Let it be in resentment, then — come, if only to hurt my heart; come, even if only to leave me once again.
Having given one's heart away, why should one go on singing laments? When the heart is no longer in the breast, why should there be a tongue in the mouth?
Love has made Ghalib useless; otherwise, I too was a man of capability.
Where now is that parting and that union? Where are those nights and days, those months and years?
An emperor, leaning on his wealth, has made a mockery of the love of us poor.
Come, let us once more become strangers to each other; let me hold no hope of kindness from you.
There is no force over love — it is such a fire, Ghalib, that cannot be lit at will and cannot be extinguished.
The heart longs once more for that leisure, when night and day we might sit lost in thoughts of the beloved.
There must have been some compulsions; no one turns faithless just like that.
Love is not blind; love opens your eyes.
In love there is no difference between living and dying; we live only to behold that heartless one for whom we would die.
