Habib Jalib (1928 to 1993) was Pakistan's poet of the street. He read his poems at rallies, went to prison under more than one government, and wrote in a direct Urdu that needs no explanation. Dastoor, his reply to the 1962 constitution, is still recited at protests.
A lamp that burns only inside palaces, that carries along the happiness of a few, that is raised in the shade of every expediency — such a constitution, such a lightless dawn, I do not accept, I do not acknowledge.
I too am not afraid of the gallows; I too am Mansur — tell the strangers so. Why do you frighten me with the prison wall? The talk of tyranny, the night of ignorance — I do not accept, I do not acknowledge.
How can I write darkness as light, a scorching gale as the morning breeze, a mere man as God? How can I write a stone as a pearl, a wall as a door, a vulture as the Huma?
Before you, the man who sat on this throne was just as certain that he was God.
For bringing the heart's word to our lips we are still paying in sorrow; we had heard that people with hearts also lived in this town.
They are afraid of verse, afraid of poetry; the narrow-sighted are afraid of light.
We do not change our path at the sight of a crowd; we do not change our demand out of fear of anyone. Let a thousand thorny roads lie under our feet — once we have set out, we do not change our resolve.
The country is in no danger; it is the rule of money that is in danger. The one who is in truth a highway robber — that 'guide' is the one in danger.
Everyone else forgot how to write the word of truth; the task that remained ours alone was to write rebellion.
Where have our chains been broken? Where have our speeches changed? What we had in mind was a homeland, not a prison; the garden of our dreams was not meant to lie this desolate.
Let go of whatever happened, my dear; light new lamps — night has fallen, my dear.
