Urdu poetry has a reputation for being difficult, and some of it is. Most of it is not. The trouble is that people start with the wrong poet, usually Ghalib or Iqbal, because those are the names they were taught at school, and bounce off the Persian vocabulary. Start instead with poets who sound like people talking, and the great ones become much easier.
Below are ten poets in the order I would read them. Each has one couplet, exactly as the poet wrote it, with a plain English translation, and a link to a page with more of their verses. Every verse on this site has been checked against the poet's published work; a great deal of what circulates online under these names was never written by them.
The Picks
1. Ahmad Faraz
Start here. Faraz writes love poetry that sounds spoken rather than written, in an Urdu almost anyone in Pakistan can follow, and many of his ghazals are known as songs. He also wrote against military rule and paid for it.
If we part this time, perhaps we will meet again only in dreams, the way dried flowers turn up pressed between the pages of books.
2. Parveen Shakir
Love from a woman's side, written with a frankness Urdu poetry had rarely allowed. Her first collection, Khushbu, made her famous in her twenties. Simple words, sharp images, and a voice like no one before her.
He is fragrance; he will scatter on the winds and be gone. The trouble is the flower's: where is the flower to go?

3. Faiz Ahmed Faiz
The bridge between love poetry and politics. Faiz kept the ghazal's language of the beloved and separation and gave it a second meaning, the struggle of ordinary people. This couplet opens one of the most famous poems in Urdu.
Do not ask of me, my love, the love I once had; I thought if you existed, life would be radiant.

4. Jaun Elia
Restless, self-mocking and funny in a bleak way, Jaun Elia found his largest audience among young readers after his death. He is also the most misquoted poet on the internet; the couplets on our page are only the ones that are really his.
Who is going to look after this house? Every day something in it breaks.
5. Habib Jalib
The poet of the street, who read at rallies and went to prison under more than one government. His Urdu is plain on purpose: it was meant to be shouted by a crowd and understood by everyone in it.
How can I write darkness as light, a scorching gale as the morning breeze, a mere man as God? How can I write a stone as a pearl, a wall as a door, a vulture as the Huma?
6. Sahir Ludhianvi
A poet of protest and love who became one of the most admired lyricists in film. You probably know some of his lines already from songs, which makes him an easy and rewarding poet to read on the page.
Come, let us become strangers once again, the two of us: I shall not look to you for any tenderness, nor shall you look at me with glances that say too much.

7. Mirza Ghalib
Now Ghalib. His divan is small and no Urdu poet is quoted more: the couplets are compact, often witty, and turn ordinary desire and grief into something that still sounds modern. Read slowly, a couplet at a time.
Thousands of desires, each worth dying for; many of my wishes came true, yet they were still too few.
8. Allama Iqbal
Pakistan's national poet, and a philosopher in verse. His poetry turns on khudi, the self a person builds through effort and faith. Bang-e-Dara is the collection most readers start with.
Elevate yourself so high that before every destiny, God Himself asks you: tell me, what is your wish?
9. Mir Taqi Mir
The poet later poets called their master. Mir is quieter than Ghalib, built on simple words and a steady sadness, and once you have read the poets above you will hear how much of Urdu poetry comes from him.
See whether it rises from the heart or from the soul; this faint smoke, where does it come from?
10. Bulleh Shah
Strictly a Punjabi poet, not an Urdu one, but no list for Pakistani readers is complete without him. His kafis argue, bluntly and beautifully, that ritual and learning mean nothing without a clean heart.
By reading and reading, you became a scholar; but you never read yourself.
How to read a ghazal
A ghazal is a chain of couplets that share a rhyme and a refrain but not, necessarily, a subject. Each couplet is meant to stand on its own, so you do not need to read a ghazal from top to bottom; read one couplet, think about it, and move on when you are ready. The beloved in a ghazal may be a person, God or a cause, and good poets let all three be true at once.
Read aloud if you can. Urdu poetry was written to be recited, and lines that look difficult on the page often make sense the moment you hear them. Many of the ghazals by Faraz, Faiz and Ghalib have been sung, and listening to a good recording is the fastest way in.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Urdu poet should a beginner read first?
Ahmad Faraz or Parveen Shakir. Both write in an Urdu close to everyday speech, and both are well known enough that you will recognise some lines. Leave Ghalib and Iqbal until you are comfortable.
Is Bulleh Shah an Urdu poet?
No. Bulleh Shah wrote in Punjabi, in the eighteenth century. He is included here because Pakistani readers of Urdu poetry nearly always read him too, and his verses are usually printed in the same Urdu script.
Why are so many quotes online wrongly attributed?
Couplets are short and easy to share, and a famous name makes a line travel further. Jaun Elia, Ahmad Faraz and Allama Iqbal are the most misattributed poets in Pakistan. Every verse on this site was checked against the poet's published collections; check the source before you share a line.
What is the difference between a ghazal and a nazm?
A ghazal is a chain of self-contained couplets sharing a rhyme and refrain. A nazm is a poem on a single subject that develops from start to finish, like Habib Jalib's Dastoor or Faiz's Mujh Se Pehli Si Mohabbat.
