Overview

Nir Eyal reveals the Hook Model, a four-step process that companies use to build habit-forming products without relying on expensive advertising.

Eyal, a former BJ Fogg student at Stanford, published Hooked in 2014 as a designer's guide to building habit-forming products. The 'Hook Model' — trigger, action, variable reward, investment — became standard vocabulary in product design, particularly in consumer tech and mobile. Eyal's later book Indistractable (2019) is partly a response to criticism that Hooked helped create the attention economy it advises against.

Who might skip it

Skip if the ethics of persuasive design bother you — the book takes a largely engineer-positive view of building engagement, and readers concerned about addictive design patterns will find it uncritical. Eyal's later public writing addresses some of this, but not in this book.

The verdict

A useful book that helped create a problem it didn't anticipate. The Hook Model is a real contribution to product-design vocabulary, and I still reach for it regularly when thinking about user behaviour. The ethical costs of applying the model at consumer scale have become clearer since; pair with Digital Minimalism to keep perspective.
