Overview
Hurston's 1937 novel follows Janie Crawford, a Black woman in early-twentieth-century Florida, through three marriages and one devastating hurricane. The book was neglected for decades after its publication before being rediscovered in the 1970s as a foundational text of Black American fiction.
Hurston wrote the book in seven weeks in Haiti in 1936, while recovering from a failed love affair. Published in 1937, it was dismissed by Richard Wright and other leading Black male writers of the era as insufficiently political. Hurston died in obscurity in 1960; Alice Walker's 1975 essay 'Looking for Zora' began the recovery of her reputation.

The verdict
A novel I return to for its language alone. The opening pages — with their image of ships at a distance carrying the wishes of every person watching — are among the finest in American fiction. Read the Virago or Harper Perennial edition with a good introduction; the scholarly context enriches without overwhelming.
